Should We Have A First Look?
Hey guys, whenever I have a meeting with a couple about wedding photography, one of the big questions I ask them is if they will have a ‘First Look’ or not. This is important because it helps me get an idea of how the day will go, especially for photos. Here are three different options & some of my thoughts about them:
My Professional Opinion - As a photographer, there are benefits to having a First Look – I get to be up close & personal & capture all the emotions, I can easily direct you, & it makes for some really touching images. You get to have a moment to calm each other’s nerves, get some hugs & kisses in before the ceremony & just breathe. This also allows me to take photos of the two of you, the bridal party, & immediate family/friends photos BEFORE the ceremony which saves a lot of time after. I want you to be able to go & mingle with your people!
My Personal Opinion – If you or your spouse are at all introverted, a First Look is probably the way to go.
Story time! When my husband & I got married almost 20 years ago, I was set on having things traditional because that’s how we did things in my family. Looking back now, I wish I would have done a first look, but they weren’t super popular back then. We are both introverted & don’t really like to have everyone looking at us. Weird how that works when you’re getting married. Anywho, what I remember is walking out those doors having over 100 people suddenly staring at me. I felt my face get super red (we have photos to prove it), all I wanted to do was look down & get to the front where he was waiting. I didn’t even get to see his face until I was up there! I wish we could have had an intimate moment where it was just us, where I could’ve seen his reaction, & we could have had a few minutes together to take a breath & just be before the chaos of the day.
Honestly, whether you choose a First Look, First Touch, or the traditional route, you can’t go wrong! It’s YOUR day, so you do you! I will be there to capture it & support you with whatever option you choose.
